Irwin-Simpson Road Improvements

Project Overview

Irwin-Simpson Road did not line up at Wilkens Blvd and so the traffic flow had to utilize Wilkens Blvd. to continue on Irwin-Simpson Road. The realignment project has been developed and underway to realign 1400 feet of Irwin-Simpson Road from Nottingham Way to Polo Drive at a cost of $1,980,050.98. Part of the plan is for a portion of the existing Irwin-Simpson Road west of Wilkens Blvd. to be abandoned and a cul-de-sac 350 feet west of Wilkens Blvd. to be constructed. The new Irwin-Simpson Road and Wilkens Blvd. intersection will be signalized. The project is funded by a Deerfield Township TIF. The design consultant on the project is American Structurepoint and the construction contract has been awarded to Mt. Pleasant Blacktop, Inc. in September 2009. Construction, having already begun, will continue until completion in June of this year.

Project Updates

April 12, 2010
The project began in the fall of 2009. At the time, Irwin-Simpson Road did not line up at Wilkens Boulevard and so the traffic flow had to utilize Wilkens Boulevard to continue on Irwin-Simpson Road. The project was undertaken to realign 1400 feet of Irwin-Simpson Road from Nottingham Way to Polo Drive at a cost of $1,980,050.98. Part of the plan is for a portion of the existing Irwin-Simpson Road west of Wilkens Boulevard to be abandoned and a cul-de-sac 350 feet west of Wilkens Boulevard to be constructed.

May 4, 2010
The Irwin-Simpson Road Relocation Project is still underway. Improvements in traffic flow are being developed. Please be on alert for changes in signaling and signage.

Starting Friday, May 7, 2010, what was originally the intersection of Deerfield Boulevard, Wilkens Boulevard, and Irwin-Simpson Road will open as the intersection of Deerfield Boulevard and Wilkens Boulevard. The intersection will also differ beginning Monday, May 10, 2010 in that it will be a 2-way stop instead of the 4-way stop it originally was. Wilkens Boulevard will no longer have stop signs, while Deerfield Boulevard will.

Construction begins Monday, May 10, 2010 to join the leg of Irwin-Simpson Road west of Wilkens Boulevard with the Irwin-Simpson Road leg east of Wilkens Boulevard. This construction will require a full closure west of Wilkens Boulevard to Nottingham Way that will last for four weeks. After construction, traffic will no longer utilize Wilkens Boulevard as a connector.

This newly developed intersection of Irwin-Simpson Road and Wilkens Boulevard will be a four-way signalized intersection. Starting Friday, May 7, 2010 the new traffic signals for this intersection will be turned on and set to blink red and then be a fully-functioning traffic signal on Monday, May 10, 2010.

The detour for the portion of construction beginning on Monday May 10, 2010 will continue to utilize Snider Road, Socialville-Fosters Road, and Wilkens Boulevard. Thank you in advance for your patience.
