Bethany Road Improvements
Project Overview
Warren County entered into contract with the consulting design engineer (KZF Design, Inc.) and gave them authorization to begin work in December of 2007. KZF’s sub-consultant, G.J. Berding Surveying, Inc., will start surveying to collect field data in January of 2008. KZF is beginning work on the preliminary engineering, which includes completing the necessary environmental studies and the preliminary roadway alignment alternatives that are required in federally funded projects.
The project purpose is to reduce congestion and improve safety and mobility along Bethany Road between Butler-Warren Road and the City of Mason’s western corporation limit (located approximately 1.5 miles east of Butler-Warren Road). The plan, provided there is no change due to the environmental and preliminary engineering studies, is to widen Bethany Road to 3 lanes (one lane in each direction with a center turn lane) and acquire right-of-way for 5 lanes in order to accommodate any future, long range improvements.
It was determined in the Southwest Warren County Transportation Study, which was completed in September of 2005 by the Ohio Kentucky Indiana Regional Council of Governments (OKI), that the widening of Bethany Road was a high priority project.
In the summer of 2006 the Warren County Engineer’s Office applied to OKI for Federal Surface Transportation Program (STP) funds and was awarded funding for the project in the amount of 70% of the cost of construction, right-of-way acquisition and utility relocation. The remaining 30% of the cost will be funded by the Warren County Engineer’s Office.
The cost of the engineering, which is $487,339.00, is being funded by the Warren Engineer’s Office. The project is estimated to cost $6.2 million for construction, right-of-way acquisition and utility relocation (funding breakdown: $4.34 million – Federal funds, $1.86 million – Warren County Engineer’s Office).
Project Schedule
A public involvement meeting is anticipated in the late spring/early summer of 2008. The engineering design plans should be complete in late 2009. The right-of-way acquisition should be complete by the end of 2010. The project should be sold and awarded by mid 2011. Construction should begin in the summer/fall of 2011.
